Large Quantity of Duty-Free Tobacco Seized in Cyprus
Police in the Republic of Cyprus have confiscated a significant quantity of duty-free tobacco products.
According to authorities, the illegal items were discovered during a court-approved search. The Customs Department was immediately informed, and officials arrived on-site to count and confiscate the goods.
In total, police seized 287 cartons of 200 cigarettes each, 102 cartons of 200 electronic cigarettes, and loose rolling tobacco weighing 14.75 kilograms. The products lacked the required health warnings in both Greek and Turkish, indicating they were counterfeit.
A suspect was arrested on charges of possessing illegal tobacco. With his written consent, officers searched his home and uncovered even more duty-free items: an additional 182 cartons of 200 cigarettes, 108 cartons of 200 e-cigarettes, and 6.6 kilograms of rolling tobacco. Authorities also seized his vehicle, which is believed to have been used to transport and distribute the contraband.
The man was released the same day after agreeing to an out-of-court settlement totaling €44,500. His vehicle was also returned after a separate compensation payment of €500.
