In Cyprus they want to completely ban alcohol for young drivers

Amendments have been submitted to parliament proposing a complete zero alcohol limit for drivers with less than three years of experience. Currently, the threshold is 9 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of breath, but lawmakers propose abolishing it and tightening liability.
The initiative is based on statistics: it is precisely novice drivers who more often lose control of a vehicle even with minimal alcohol consumption. The country is стремing to bring its rules closer to European safety standards.
Proposed fines for drivers with less than 3 years of experience:
- up to 10 mg/100 ml — fine of 125 euros
- 10–23 mg — 250 euros
- 23–36 mg — 500 euros
Above 36 mg or non-payment of the fine — the case is sent to court. Possible:
- Prison for up to 2 years,
- Fine of up to 10,000 euros.
Transport Minister Alexis Vafeadis supported the amendments, noting that the measures are aimed at reducing accidents. According to the police, from 2010 to 2024 alcohol caused 733 road accidents, in which 181 people died.
