Cyprus launches a week of inspections: police to intensify controls on distracted driving
The Cyprus Police announced a nationwide campaign to raise awareness and strengthen road safety enforcement. The main focus will be on driver distraction, particularly the use of mobile phones and electronic devices while driving.
The campaign will run from October 6 to October 12, 2025, in cooperation with the European traffic police network ROADPOL, as part of a pan-European initiative to reduce the number of accidents caused by inattentive driving.
The police will carry out both educational and practical actions — increased patrols, random checks, and special operations. Particular attention will be paid to drivers using their phones, texting, or being distracted by navigation while driving. Other typical violations such as not wearing seat belts, speeding, and driving under the influence will also be checked.
According to official data, between 2022 and 2024, 21.4% of all fatal road accidents and 24.3% of serious crashes in Cyprus were caused by driver distraction. The police emphasize that such behavior drastically reduces reaction time and poses a direct threat to the lives of drivers, passengers, and pedestrians.
Citizens are urged not to use phones without hands-free devices, to avoid distractions from conversations or apps while driving, and to strictly follow traffic regulations. The campaign’s goal is not only to issue fines but also to raise awareness that a single second of inattention can cost a life.
