Over 1,500 Illegal Dumpsites Discovered in Cyprus
Authorities in the Republic of Cyprus are increasingly concerned about the rising number of unauthorized dumpsites across the country. Recent inspections have identified more than 1,500 illegal dumpsites.
According to officials, the "green zones" set up in several municipalities for solid household waste collection have not effectively addressed the issue of uncontrolled waste disposal. A total of 1,500 illegal dumps have been discovered within 349 municipalities, with an additional 113 sites classified as uncontrolled waste disposal areas.
The waste situation has notably deteriorated following the closure of the Kotsiatis and Vati landfills.
Officials also highlight that illegal dumps and waste pits have become a primary cause of major fires in recent times. Each year, the Cyprus fire service responds to hundreds of garbage fire incidents nationwide.
