No Electricity Supply Issues Expected in Cyprus
Cyprus is not expected to face any electricity supply issues in the coming days. However, a surge in demand is forecasted for August 15.
According to Haris Kousiappas, a representative of the Cyprus Transmission System Operator (TSO), peak demand for electricity is projected to reach approximately 1050 MW at 3:30 PM on August 14. During the evening peak hours, from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM, when electricity generation largely depends on conventional plants, demand is expected to be around 900-920 MW.
On August 15, the maximum demand is anticipated to reach 940 MW, which is higher than the previous year when demand on the same day was 865 MW. The evening peak demand is forecasted to be in the range of 850-880 MW.
"Under normal conditions, no supply issues are expected unless there is a failure of a power unit, in which case meeting the demand may be challenging," said Kousiappas.
He added that the maximum production capacity of conventional power plants over the next few days, including August 15 and Friday, August 16, is projected to be 995 MW.
It is also noted that prolonged high temperatures this summer have led to higher demand than usual for this time of year.
Recently, Cyprus has faced issues with power units from the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC). Some units are currently undergoing short-term maintenance, and operational reserves are limited, especially considering the ongoing high temperatures.
