Cyprus discusses law regulating specialized volunteer groups
On October 22, 2025, a meeting was held at the Ministry of Interior in Nicosia, Cyprus, chaired by Minister of Interior Konstantinos Ioannou. The meeting was attended by AKEL party MP Irini Charalampidu.
During the discussion, the minister thanked Irini Charalampidu for her initiative and noted that specialized volunteer groups are an important element in the prevention and elimination of natural and man-made disasters. He recalled their significant contribution during the major fire in July.
Ioannou stated that the Ministry, through Civil Defense, is simultaneously developing the relevant legislative text to institutionalize and more effectively utilize volunteer groups. He also emphasized the willingness to cooperate to combine both proposals into a single project.
Irini Charalampidu expressed satisfaction with the Ministry's position and stressed the need for full coordination between state structures and volunteer groups ahead of the upcoming fire season. The MP hoped that the draft law would be submitted to a plenary session for voting before next summer.
