Red Alert Issued in Cyprus Due to Forest Fire Risk
On Monday, September 16, a "red" fire danger alert has been declared in Cyprus. This decision was made by the Department of Forests under the Ministry of Agriculture due to extremely strong winds, which are expected to reach up to 6 on the Beaufort scale today.
According to the department's statement, if a wildfire occurs, it will be extremely difficult, and potentially "impossible," to control if the fire is not managed in its early stages.
Residents are urged to be particularly cautious and to avoid actions that could lead to a fire. It is advised to refrain from using tools that generate heat or sparks, such as grinding wheels, welding tools, and electric welding equipment. Additionally, throwing away unextinguished cigarette butts and burning grass, branches, or trash is prohibited.
Lighting fires for cooking or heating food is only permitted in grills located in designated picnic areas.
The statement also emphasizes that lighting a bonfire in state forests or within 2 kilometers of their boundaries without permission is prohibited. Offenders may face up to 10 years in prison, a fine of up to €50,000, or both penalties combined.
If smoke or fire is detected, it should be reported immediately to the nearest forest station or by calling 1407.
