Another batch of vehicles with dangerous Takata airbags is being recalled in Cyprus
The Cyprus Department of Road Transport has announced a recall of vehicles equipped with defective Takata airbags, which are considered potentially dangerous for drivers and passengers. The warning was issued following a notification in the European Safety Gate system, which stated that the faulty devices may explode upon activation, scattering metal fragments.
According to the authorities, the list of at-risk vehicles includes models produced by several well-known companies. Among them are Audi, BMW, Chevrolet, Citroën, Dacia, Daihatsu, Ford, Honda, Hyundai, Jaguar, Land Rover, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Opel, Peugeot, Renault, Seat, Skoda, Subaru, Suzuki, Toyota, and Volkswagen. The recall applies to passenger cars, SUVs, motorcycles, and light trucks.
Owners are advised to check their vehicles by VIN number and, if a risk is detected, to temporarily stop using the vehicle until the defect is repaired.
In Cyprus, around 80,000 vehicles are subject to inspection and possible replacement. Owners are strongly encouraged to verify their cars by VIN number to determine whether a Takata airbag is installed. If a risk is confirmed, the vehicle should not be used until it is repaired or replaced.
The increased attention to this issue stems from a series of fatal incidents involving defective airbags. The explosion of the gas generator during activation can cause severe injuries or even the death of the driver.
The authorities have warned that from February next year, vehicles that have not had their Takata airbags replaced will not be able to pass the roadworthiness test or pay the road tax. The Ministry of Transport urged all car owners not to delay the inspection and to contact only authorized service centers for free defect repair.
In Cyprus, you can check whether a vehicle is equipped with Takata airbags in several official ways:
1. Through the website of the Cyprus Department of Road Transport — in the “Vehicle Recalls” section, there is a form for VIN number verification: https://www.mcw.gov.cy/mcw/dlr/dlr.nsf/recalls_en/recalls_en
2. On the manufacturer’s or official dealer’s website — almost all automakers (Toyota, Honda, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, etc.) provide dedicated pages for checking vehicles involved in the Takata recall. You only need to enter the 17-digit VIN code listed in the registration certificate.
3. At official dealer service centers — car owners can contact distributors directly, who are obliged to replace the airbags free of charge if a defect is confirmed.
