The government of the Republic of Cyprus has reached a compromise on how to reduce the impact of high traffic fines for drivers. The proposed changes will soon be presented for a vote in the House of Representatives.

Transport Minister Alexis Vafeades outlined the upcoming legislative changes. The first change extends the payment deadline for traffic fines from the current 30 days to 90 days.

The second change increases the penalty point limit for driving license suspensions. Drivers will now face suspension after accumulating 16 penalty points, up from the current limit of 12 points.

Regarding the proposed 90-day payment period, if a violator fails to pay within the new 90-day window, they will be granted an additional 15-day extension, though this extension will incur an additional fee.

At present, drivers have 30 days to pay fines, with an option to extend by 15 days. However, payments made during the extension period come with a 50% surcharge on the original fine. If the fine is still unpaid after 45 days, the violator is taken to court.

The extension from 30 to 90 days replaces a previous proposal that would have allowed drivers to pay fines in installments.
