Scandal Surrounds the Killing of Pakistani Man in Cyprus Buffer Zone

Cyprus is facing widespread public backlash as investigations continue into the death of a 24-year-old Pakistani national who was fatally shot by police. The state pathologist who performed the autopsy has been suspended, and an independent investigator has been appointed to oversee the case.

The tragedy occurred on January 6, when police reportedly shot the man during an incident in Potamia, located within the buffer zone. Strangely, his body was later found in Strovolos, nearly 30 kilometers away from the Green Line.

The initial autopsy report concluded that the death was accidental. Despite the presence of a gaping gunshot wound in the victim's shoulder, the state pathologist ruled out foul play. However, days later, it emerged that the wound, initially attributed to a stone injury, was in fact caused by a gunshot.

Government spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis announced that, following a Cabinet decision, the state pathologist would be suspended pending the outcome of a disciplinary investigation.

The incident has caused widespread outrage, with many questioning the circumstances of the shooting. Attorney General George Savvides has appointed Senior State Counsel Ninos Kekkos to lead an independent inquiry into the matter.

According to a police statement, officers were patrolling the buffer zone on the day of the incident and spotted three vehicles suspected of smuggling migrants. Officers allegedly opened fire on the tires of one of the trucks. It was later confirmed that the Pakistani man died as a result of a gunshot fired by a police officer.

No additional details have been provided. In response to the Attorney General's announcement, the police released a statement saying they would make no further comments on the case but would continue their investigation.
