Increased Theft of Power Lines and Transformers on the Rise in Cyprus
The Cyprus Electricity Authority (EAC) reports a surge in cases of equipment theft from the company's distribution network. The thefts primarily involve transformers located on wooden poles, power lines of medium and low voltage, and equipment within the buildings of distribution substations.
In the statement issued by energy officials, it is emphasized that stealing equipment from the active network is not only a criminal offense but also poses significant danger.
- There is an immediate risk of electric shock for those involved in dismantling the equipment, as well as for the general public. Additionally, such interventions can lead to damage to consumers' electrical appliances, the EAC statement warns.
The EAC added that the company is taking technical and other precautionary measures, including involving the police, to address this issue.
In case members of the public notice a missing door at a distribution substation or any suspicious activity near the EAC network, it is recommended to report it immediately to the hotlines at 80006002 or 1800.
