Installation of Cameras to Monitor Overloaded Trucks in Cyprus
The Government of the Republic of Cyprus plans to install cameras for monitoring overloaded trucks, as announced yesterday by Minister of Transport, Alexis Vafeades.
According to the minister, spot weighing equipment has already been installed on certain sections of Cyprus highways and will soon be fully operational.
Once ready, the government will install cameras to photograph and record vehicles detected with excess weight by the sensors.
Cyprus' road network is designed to handle specific weight capacities. Vehicles exceeding the maximum allowed weight contribute to road surface deterioration, posing dangers to other road users, especially motorcyclists, and causing rainwater accumulation in puddles.
The minister stressed that overloaded trucks represent a "significant risk" to road safety.
In response, "a recent decision has been made to implement more stringent measures aimed at achieving better outcomes."
One option under consideration could involve "restricting specific vehicles from certain roads at designated times." However, given potential economic impacts, this measure will only be employed as a last resort.
The minister also clarified that, for similar economic reasons, the government has no plans to introduce fees for entering city centers.
Until the cameras are installed, ongoing checks on trucks traveling Cyprus roads will continue.
