In Cyprus, the number of "noisy" flights over cities will be reduced by five times
The airports in Cyprus will reduce the number of flights for which sound intensity measurements are required. Instead of 50,000 take-offs and landings per year, only 10,000 are expected to remain.
At a recent plenary session, the majority of votes approved a proposal to amend the Law on the Assessment and Management of Environmental Noise. The initiative aims to reduce the annual movement of aircraft (take-offs and landings) requiring sound intensity measurements. The proposal was put forward by members of the parliament from the Environmental Movement and Civil Cooperation.
The proposed resolution is considered necessary for the two airports operating in the Republic of Cyprus – in Larnaca and Paphos – to be monitored for noise caused by aircraft and to submit relevant reports as part of the noise mapping process to the competent authority.
Furthermore, the results of this mapping will allow an assessment of any impact of noise on the quality of life and health of people residing in the immediate vicinity of the airfields.
It is noted that all representatives of competent services invited to the discussion in the Environmental Protection Committee agreed with its goals and tasks to minimize the potential impact on the population of constant and/or excessive noise.
According to the authors of the amendment, the competent authority had to ensure a certain number of flights in two airports, totaling 50,000 per year. Currently, this number has been reduced to 10,000, and therefore, the relevant authority is obliged to conduct measurements and take measures to protect citizens.
