Cyprus has signed a contract for the installation of an "Intelligent Transport System" (ITS). Already operational in many countries, it will be implemented on the island within the next two years.

It is expected that through information and communication technologies, the ITS will transform the road network into a "safer, more efficient, and economical" system.

The system will be fully operational within the coming years and includes the establishment of a Traffic Management Center, installation of 170 traffic surveillance cameras, 180 traffic sensors, and 40 variable message signs.

This integrated system will monitor traffic flow and provide information to road users and authorities for effective management.

According to recently signed contracts, the project will be completed within two years. It will enable immediate police response to traffic increases or accidents on major road arteries.

Data from other European countries indicate that implementing intelligent transport systems has reduced traffic congestion by 10% and accidents by 15%.

The project is funded by the Recovery and Resilience Fund.
