Second Case of Meningitis Reported in Cyprus in 24 Hours
Cyprus has reported a second case of bacterial meningitis within a 24-hour period. A baby from Paphos has been admitted to Makarios Hospital.
Elizabeth Constantinou, the Director of the Medical Service, confirmed the second case.
The first case of meningitis was identified the previous day in a high school student from Limassol, who is also hospitalized.
Doctors believe the two cases are unrelated.
In both cases, the Ministry of Health's protocols have been activated. Anyone who has come into contact with the infected individuals in recent days has been prescribed medication and preventative treatment.
Michalis Anastasiadis, the President of the Cyprus Pediatric Society, highlighted that bacterial meningitis is a serious infection, unlike viral meningitis, which is generally milder.
Each year, Cyprus reports approximately two cases of bacterial meningitis, while viral cases can number in the dozens.
