In Cyprus, 500 cases of domestic violence have been recorded in two months
In just two months, the police of the Republic of Cyprus investigated 500 cases of domestic violence. During September and October, 93 people were arrested.
According to information provided by the Cyprus News Agency (CNA), 131 complaints of domestic violence were filed in Nicosia, 135 in Limassol, 117 in Larnaca, 37 in Paphos, 68 in Famagusta, and eight in Morphou.
The Association for the Prevention and Combating of Domestic Violence presented data indicating an increase in the number of reports of domestic violence cases over the past four years.
In particular, in 2019, there were 1384 incidents, in 2020 the number rose to 2147, and in the following year to 2854. In 2022, the number increased to 3122, and from the beginning of 2023 to October, 2550 similar episodes were recorded.
According to the association, to date, the hotline has received 914 calls.
Meanwhile, at the Women's Shelter, 387 cases were reviewed, legal consultations were provided for 45 cases, and 12 requests for legal assistance were submitted.
In total, 317 women and 437 children are currently accommodated in association facilities.
It is also reported that 90 percent of the perpetrators were Cypriots. Additionally, of the cases addressed to the association's call center, 67% of the victims and 66% of the perpetrators have Cypriot citizenship, and in 68% of cases, the victim lives with the abuser.
