Electricity Demand in Cyprus Drops
In the past two days, Cyprus has experienced a significant drop in electricity demand, thanks to warmer temperatures. This has provided some relief to both the Cyprus Transmission System Operator and the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC).
According to the operators, the island is currently generating enough electricity to meet consumer demand. On the previous evening, at 7:15 PM, the peak demand reached 795 MW.
It’s important to note that last week, due to the unusually cold weather, Cyprus saw a record high in electricity demand. The government had been urged to take preventive measures to avoid a potential crisis.
Just a week earlier, Cyprus had to seek help from the Turkish Cypriots. Electricity was supplied free of charge from the northern part of the island to the south.
“We were able to witness the resilience of the current energy systems last week, but concerns about electricity sufficiency this summer remain,” said the EAC.
Next Tuesday, the leadership of the energy company will meet with the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, at the Presidential Palace.
The Minister of Energy will also be present at the meeting. The purpose of the discussions is to assess the current electricity generation capabilities and their outlook for the next few years, especially with the anticipated arrival of natural gas at Vasilikos.
