Bonfires in rural areas banned in Cyprus
The Republic of Cyprus has banned the lighting of bonfires in rural areas for burning weeds, trimmings, trees, and other objects. The Department of Forestry issued a corresponding warning.
The agency's statement notes that lighting bonfires in rural areas is prohibited, except for cooking in specially permitted and regulated areas located in organized excursion sites and camping grounds.
"Bonfires in state forests or within 2 km of their boundaries are a violation punishable under the 2012 Forestry Law by imprisonment for up to 10 years or a fine of up to 50,000 euros, or both penalties together," the statement said.
In addition, the public is strongly advised to equip agricultural or other machinery that may cause ignition with a fire extinguisher to prevent the risk of forest fires and protect their property.
Recall that several major forest fires occurred in Cyprus this week. As some of them were caused by the use or destruction of pyrotechnics, all types of fireworks have been banned in the country.
