Restoration of Alaminos Mosque in Larnaca Completed
The restoration of the Alaminos Mosque in Larnaca District has been successfully completed, according to Sotos Ktoris and Ali Tuncay, co-chairs of the Bicommunal Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage.
The project included plaster repairs and maintenance inside and outside the building, reinforcement of cracked arches and walls, and restoration of wooden doors and window frames. The work was funded by the European Union with technical support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
Until 1974, Alaminos was a mixed village, remaining so despite intercommunal tensions in Cyprus during the 1960s. However, on July 20, 1974, the Cypriot National Guard entered the village in response to Turkey’s military intervention in the north. The Turkish Cypriots defending the village eventually surrendered, but around 15 of them were executed in the village center. By the end of the year, most of the remaining Turkish Cypriot residents had relocated to Kythrea (Diğermenlik).
