€35 Million Allocated for Disability Support Projects in Cyprus
December 3 marks International Day of Persons with Disabilities. In Cyprus, work is underway on three projects, co-funded by the European Union, aimed at addressing challenges and gaps in support for people with disabilities. The total value of these projects exceeds €35 million.
The Minister of Social Welfare made this announcement in honor of International Day of Persons with Disabilities. According to the minister, these three projects are part of the national action plan to enhance social integration and improve the quality of life for people with disabilities.
The projects focus on optimizing the disability assessment system, improving support for independent living, and establishing a family intervention and support center for people with autism. The budgets for these projects are €10.5 million, €20 million, and €5 million, respectively.
The autism center project was deemed necessary due to the rising number of diagnoses and the need to assist families in managing the unique challenges they face.
Furthermore, next week, a revised comprehensive action plan, titled "From Birth to Third Age," for the 2024–2028 period will be presented to the Council of Ministers.
“Guided by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, 75 new measures have been developed, which will be implemented by eight ministries and four deputy ministries. These initiatives aim to improve the quality of life for people with disabilities,” the minister added.
