Flamingo Centenarians Spotted at Larnaca Salt Lake
Flamingo centenarians have been spotted at Larnaca Salt Lake. The ecological non-governmental organization BirdLife Cyprus reported about birds that have lived to a ripe old age.
According to a post on BirdLife's social media, the birds, ringed as chicks, turned out to be 20 and 28 years old.
Images of the two flamingo pensioners were captured by photographer Yannis Ioannou and shared by the non-governmental organization.
“It's amazing what we can learn through ringing. Such discoveries are truly impressive,” BirdLife's post stated.
According to the announcement, one of the birds was ringed in the Camargue Regional Nature Park in France in 1996, while the other was ringed in the Gediz Delta of the Hermus River in Turkey in 2004.
According to National Geographic, flamingos in the wild can live up to 20 or 30 years, whereas those in captivity can live up to 83 years.
