Reasons Behind Sudden Power Outages in Cyprus Revealed
The Cyprus Electricity Authority has identified the reasons behind sudden power outages across Cyprus. These disruptions are attributed to "scheduled maintenance work as well as unexpected faults."
As explained by a spokesperson on the "Good Morning ALPHA" program, breakdowns occur in all electricity systems due to unforeseen incidents. Regarding planned power outages, residents will be informed in advance—typically 48 hours beforehand. Energy authorities are currently planning either to upgrade and reinforce the network or to maintain its current state.
"Our Electricity Management System is robust and constantly undergoing upgrades, hence the occasional planned outages," stated a company representative.
Network failures often stem from extreme weather conditions such as prolonged heatwaves or strong winds. Depending on the circumstances, restoring faults typically takes anywhere from 10 to 15 minutes to several hours.
The overhead cable network spans 16.5 thousand kilometers, with an additional 12.5 thousand kilometers underground, posing increased challenges in fault detection in certain cases.
There has also been an increase in incidents involving theft of overhead cables from EAC distribution stations recently, contributing to electricity supply issues.
