New Commander of British Bases in Cyprus Sworn In
Major General Tom Bewick has officially taken over command of the British Forces in Cyprus, succeeding Air Vice-Marshal Peter Squires of the Royal Air Force.
The handover ceremony was held at the British Forces headquarters in Episkopi. As part of his new role, Major General Bewick will also serve as the Administrator of the Sovereign Base Areas of Akrotiri and Dhekelia, overseeing both military operations and civilian affairs.
During the swearing-in, the new commander expressed his pride in taking on this dual responsibility and said he was looking forward to exploring all that Cyprus has to offer — both on and off the bases.
“It’s a tremendous honour and privilege to step into the role of Regional Administrator for the British Bases. I feel incredibly fortunate to serve in both capacities. Cyprus is a remarkable place, and there’s important work ahead. The relationship between the United Kingdom and the Republic of Cyprus has gone from strength to strength in recent years — as highlighted by our Prime Minister’s recent historic visit. I’m excited to contribute to furthering this partnership,” said Major General Bewick.
Prior to this appointment, Major General Bewick served as the Head of Recruitment and Initial Training Command for the British Army.
