Mosquito season in Cyprus: when to expect it and how to protect yourself
Cyprus experiences two main mosquito activity periods each year — in spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October). Warm temperatures and high humidity, especially after heavy rains and the formation of standing water, create favorable conditions for these insects.
According to health authorities, the number of mosquitoes has been increasing in recent years due to climate change and longer rainy seasons. After rainfall, puddles, flower pot trays, clogged drains, and open containers create ideal breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
Authorities and environmental experts advise residents to take preventive measures in advance. It is essential to remove sources of standing water around homes, clean drainage systems, and regularly change water in pet bowls. Installing and checking mosquito screens on windows and doors is also recommended.
For personal protection, specialists recommend using repellents containing active ingredients such as DEET, picaridin, or icaridin, wearing light-colored long-sleeved clothing, and avoiding outdoor activities in the evening — when mosquitoes are most active. Mosquito nets over beds, electric traps, and ultrasonic repellents are also considered effective.
In recent years, Cyprus has implemented government programs to control mosquito populations. One biological method involves releasing sterilized male mosquitoes that cannot reproduce. Experts note that this approach helps reduce the insect population without using chemical insecticides.
Health authorities remind residents that regular prevention, vigilance, and eliminating breeding sites remain the most effective ways to combat mosquitoes. Following these simple measures can significantly reduce their numbers and prevent bites.
