Winners Announced for the 77th Cannes Film Festival
The film "Anora" by American director Sean Baker, featuring a Russian actor in one of the roles, won the prestigious Golden Palm at the 77th Cannes Film Festival. The winners were announced during a ceremony held at the Festival Palace on Saturday.
The winning film portrays the story of a young sex worker from Brooklyn who marries the son of a Russian oligarch. When the groom's parents fly to New York to break up their marriage, tensions rise. Russian actor Yuri Borisov is among the cast.
The Grand Prix, the festival's second most significant award, went to the Indian director Payal Kapadia for the drama "All That We Imagine as Light."
The Best Director award was presented to Portuguese filmmaker Miguel Gomes for the film "The Grand Tour."
French director Jacques Audiard's film "Emilia Perez" received the Jury Prize at the festival. The four actresses who played the lead roles in this film, Carla Sofia Gascon, Selena Gomez, Zoya Saldana, and Adriana Pas, were awarded the Best Actress prize.
The film "The Seed of the Sacred Fig" by Iranian director Mohammad Rasoulof won the Jury Prize for the screenplay, as well as the award from the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI).
Jesse Plemons was named Best Actor at the 77th Cannes Film Festival for his role in the film "Acts of Kindness" by Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos.
The Best Screenplay award went to French film director and screenwriter Coralie Fargeat for the film "Substance."
The Golden Camera award for a debut film at the festival was presented to Norwegian filmmaker Halvdan Ulman Tøndel for "Armand." The film was featured in the "Un Certain Regard" program.
A reminder that the 77th Cannes International Film Festival took place from May 14 to May 25, 2024, with Greta Gerwig serving as the jury president.
The opening film of the festival was the French movie "Second Act" directed by Quentin Dupieux. This year, the main competition of the festival featured 22 films.
