Israeli President Booed in Cyprus Amid Protests, Highlights Strong Ties Between Nations
Israeli President Isaac Herzog made an unplanned visit to Cyprus, where he emphasized the importance of the strong bond between the two nations. Speaking during his meeting with Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides, Herzog described the relationship as "a vital pillar of hope." However, his visit was overshadowed by protests from local residents.
- “The strong friendship and cooperation between Cyprus and Israel, and our peoples, serve as crucial pillars of stability, security, and hope in the region,” Herzog stated.
In a post on platform X, Herzog expressed his gratitude to President Christodoulides for his “steadfast friendship and warm, productive discussion.”
The two leaders focused on what Herzog described as their "top priority"—ensuring the safe return of hostages being held by Hamas in Gaza. They also discussed regional challenges and ongoing humanitarian efforts in the Gaza Strip.
- “I deeply value our partnership and look forward to continuing our efforts together for a brighter future,” Herzog added.
Herzog’s brief, unscheduled visit to Cyprus on January 9 came amid heightened security measures. His arrival was met with protests, as local residents voiced their discontent over what they called ongoing genocide in Gaza and Israel’s actions. Demonstrators gathered outside the Presidential Palace, booing Herzog as he arrived.
