More than 150 houses were affected by the storm in Limassol; 167 people sought assistance
As a result of the natural disaster in Limassol, more than 150 houses were affected. Authorities continue to assess the damages and address the consequences of the storm that hit the city.
The mayor of Germasogeia, Kyriakos Xidias, discussed the consequences of the weather on the Alpha Kalimera show. According to the mayor, the Limassol district administration has opened a special hotline for those affected by the disaster. In total, 167 calls were received. According to preliminary data, 135 residential houses, two apartment buildings, eight commercial premises, and 22 vehicles were affected by the weather.
However, it is expected that the number of affected individuals and damaged properties will be much higher since the assessment is not yet complete.
The Minister of Internal Affairs arrived at the disaster area, held a meeting, and gave clear instructions to the district administration. Among them is the directive to find accommodation for families left homeless. According to the minister, after registering the damages, compensation will be paid to all affected individuals.
It is known that five families have already been accommodated in hotels; however, according to the mayor's estimates, there may be many more people left homeless: many have stayed with relatives and friends.
It is also reported that one foreigner was seriously injured as a result of the extreme weather. He was transferred from Limassol General Hospital to Nicosia General Hospital in critical condition. The man had his fingers amputated, and he is awaiting another operation.
Kyriakos Xidias described the work to repair the damages as "excellent." This morning, the cleanup of the aftermath of the storm continues. However, the situation is significantly complicated by the ongoing rains in the region, which are flooding many damaged properties through open roofs.
It is worth reminding that tornadoes and storms hit the municipality on Wednesday morning around 03:30.
