Pedoulas: Andoniou Winery revives the Maratasa wine region in Cyprus
In the village of Pedoulas in the Maratasa region of Cyprus, Andoniou Winery produces wines reflecting the local terroir. The first rosé line appeared in 2021, red wine in 2022, and white in 2024.
The vineyards are located on terraces at up to 1,100 m above sea level. The soils are mostly volcanic, deep, and rocky, ensuring good drainage. The planted area covers nearly 5 hectares.
The estate cultivates Maratheftiko, Xynisteri, Spourtiko, and Cabernet Sauvignon. The climate with warm summers and cool nights helps preserve acidity and freshness in the grapes.
Sustainable agricultural practices and solar energy are applied in production. Winemaking is led by oenologist Apostolos Matamis; all stages from harvest to aging are controlled to ensure quality.
Products include: 2024 Marél — Xynisteri-Spourtiko blend (€15.30), 2024 Eléngo dry rosé — Maratheftiko, Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache blend (€15.30), 2023 Loizias Maratheftiko (€25.20). Pairings with seafood, salads, and meat dishes are recommended depending on the wine type.
