In September, the Republic of Cyprus has seen increased attention to supporting local artisans with the launch of the online platform Handmade in Cyprus. This was reported by the service’s creator, Luzdari Hammad-Stavrou, who launched the marketplace in 2024 to enhance the visibility of Cypriot craftsmen and provide them access beyond local markets and fairs.

Handmade in Cyprus is a curated platform for handmade products in categories ranging from accessories and cosmetics to home décor. According to organizers, the initiative emerged amid changes in consumer habits triggered by the pandemic: border closures and delivery delays prompted Cypriots to seek local products and alternatives to mass production.

The platform’s creators note that Cypriot craft traditions are historically strong — silverwork, lace, and ceramics have centuries of history. Nevertheless, the shift toward regular support for local production is gradual. According to Luzdari Hammad-Stavrou, some Russians and Cypriots still prioritize low prices when purchasing, despite the growing interest in unique and sustainable solutions.

For residents of Cyprus, the launch of such platforms provides an opportunity to find high-quality handmade items without paying extra for imports, as well as to develop the community and support the island’s economy. The organizers emphasize the role of not only online commerce but also traditional markets, where buyers can meet artisans personally and learn the story behind each product.

This trend reflects a broader shift toward more conscious and local consumption among both permanent residents and visitors.
