The Mavrokolympos Dam has been restored and is ready to receive water
The Mavrokolympos Dam in the Paphos area is now fully operational and ready to receive water, according to the regional engineer of the Paphos Water Development Department, Haris Kasioulis. The repair works, caused by a major failure in January, were completed a few days ago.
According to Kasioulis, the water release system, whose breakdown had previously led to the loss of all stored reserves, has been restored. In addition, additional works were carried out to improve the structure in order to prevent similar problems in the future.
The dam has been reconnected to Paphos’s irrigation network and is ready to receive rainfall volumes of the current hydrological year. At present, the replenishment of the reservoir will occur primarily through rainfall, since at this stage there is no surplus of treated water from the Asprokremmos treatment plant that could be diverted to Mavrokolympos.
As consumption decreases and surplus treated water becomes available, further replenishment of the reservoir from the Asprokremmos system will be possible. At the same time, separate finishing works continue at the dam, which do not affect its current operation and are aimed at enhancing its operational capacity. Filling the reservoir is important for agriculture in the lowland western part of Paphos.
