Suspects in the murder of Stavros Demosthenous agree to extradition
Two individuals arrested in Thessaloniki in connection with the murder of 49-year-old businessman Stavros Demosthenous have agreed to be extradited to Cyprus, media reported on Friday.
Both detainees appeared before the Thessaloniki court on Friday morning; according to CNN, they consented to extradition in order to participate in legal proceedings on the island. It is known that the men will remain in custody until they are handed over to Cypriot authorities, which is expected “in the near future”.
Earlier reports stated that the arrested individuals are Greek nationals of Georgian origin who were residing in Cyprus at the time of the murder. According to media, after committing the crime they left Cyprus and traveled to Thessaloniki, where they have relatives.
Demosthenous, best known as the chairman of second-division football club Karmiotissa, was shot while sitting in the passenger seat of a car driven by his 18-year-old son. Police spokesperson Kyriaki Lambrianidou stated that the shot was fired approximately 500 meters from the victim’s home and, according to initial information, came from a moving vehicle ahead. After the shot was fired, the son headed to the hospital, was involved in a traffic accident on the highway, and then asked a passerby to transport the injured man to the hospital. Demosthenous was taken to Limassol General Hospital where he was pronounced dead; the son was unharmed.
