The British Sovereign Base Area (SBA) Police in Cyprus caught and fined three poachers
Over the past ten days, the British Sovereign Base Area (SBA) Police in Cyprus have arrested and fined three individuals for violations of bird trapping rules. The total amount of fines imposed amounted to 4,500 euros.
The arrests were made in the area of the Eastern Sovereign Base on January 19, 21, and 23 after freshly killed thrushes, nets, bird decoy devices, and cartridges were discovered in the area.
According to the SBA Police, the arrests followed intensified patrols in collaboration with non-governmental organizations to combat the poaching of migrating thrushes, especially from November to February.
In particular, in the Ayios Nikolaos area, one of the detained men was found with three nets measuring 75 meters in length.
"We are proud of the achievements we have made in reducing the number of bird trapping incidents in the SBA territory, and we are determined to continue this work," said Superintendent of the SBA, Panikos Panayi, after the arrests.
It is also noted that two of the arrested individuals are expected to appear in court soon to face additional charges for other offenses.
