Cyprus Police Explain New Rules for Out-of-Court Traffic Fines
New regulations regarding out-of-court fines for traffic violations have been introduced in the Republic of Cyprus. The police have issued a detailed explanation on how the updated rules will be enforced.
According to amendments published in the Republic’s Official Gazette, the following changes will take effect on March 31, 2025:
-
Criminal proceedings may be initiated 105 days after an out-of-court fine is issued and remains unpaid. Previously, this period was 45 days.
-
The countdown for prosecution will now begin from the date the fine is delivered to the recipient, rather than the date it was issued.
-
A late payment penalty, which doubles the original fine, will now apply if the fine is not paid within 90 days, replacing the previous 30-day period.
-
For non-traffic-related administrative violations (minor offences), the existing 15-day payment window remains unchanged. If not paid within that time, the fine will still be doubled.
The Cyprus Police have emphasized the importance of these new deadlines and are encouraging the public to address any fines promptly to avoid complications. Technical systems are being updated to ensure that all individuals fined are properly informed.
