Limassol Police on High Alert Ahead of Competing Demonstrations
The Limassol Police Department is preparing to take measures to prevent potential disturbances as two competing demonstrations are set to take place in the city this evening. The far-right political party ELAM is organizing a "March Against the Crime of Illegal Immigrants," while antifascist groups are planning a rally titled "Against Fascism."
According to a police statement, the anti-migrant march will proceed along Independence Street, while the antifascism protest will be held in the Molos area. The simultaneous timing of these events raises concerns about the possibility of violent clashes.
To maintain order, the Limassol police will be supported by officers from neighboring districts, as well as a mobile riot control unit. The police are also working closely with the event organizers to ensure public safety.
The Limassol Criminal Investigation Department is closely monitoring the situation, as tensions in the city have increased since the announcement of the two rallies.
A police spokesperson reminded the public that peaceful protests are a right, as long as they do not violate the law or infringe upon the rights of others. Authorities emphasized that the carrying of weapons, wearing of hoods, or using racist or offensive language will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
To facilitate security, Independence Street will be closed starting at 6:30 p.m. Police are also preparing for potential flashpoints in areas with large foreign populations.
