Envoy of the UN Secretary-General to Hold Talks in New York on the Cyprus Issue

The newly appointed personal envoy of the UN Secretary-General on Cyprus, Maria Angela Olguin Cuéllar, will arrive in New York this week. Maria Angela Olguin Cuéllar will have a series of meetings on the Cyprus issue.

According to the Cyprus News Agency, the envoy will meet with the UN Special Representative on Cyprus, Colin Stewart, the Assistant Secretary-General for Europe, Central Asia, and the Americas, Miroslav Jenča, the UN Deputy Secretary-General for Political Affairs and Peacebuilding, Rosemary DiCarlo, and directly with the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

According to sources cited by the publication, after New York, Maria Angela Olguin Cuéllar will visit Cyprus, where she will meet with the leaders of the two communities. The final date of the visit is not yet known.

Recall that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres appointed Maria Angela Olguin Cuéllar from Colombia as his personal envoy on Cyprus; it became known at the end of last week.

In a written statement by the UN spokesperson, it is mentioned that Antonio Guterres asked his representative on the island to take on the "role of goodwill" to find common ground on the Cyprus issue on his behalf and requested advice on resolving this problem.
