Russian Ambassador to Cyprus: Cypriots are awaiting the mass return of Russian tourists
The Russian Ambassador to Cyprus, Murat Zyazikov, spoke to "Komsomolskaya Pravda" about the friendship between the two nations, the impact of sanctions on Cypriot businesses, and the anticipation of the return of Russian tourists to the island.
The diplomat emphasized that Russians have traditionally been one of the main tourist markets for Cyprus. However, with the closure of direct flights, reaching the island has become challenging.
Zyazikov stated that Cypriot authorities are actively working to attract tourists from other countries, but no one can compare to the citizens of Russia in terms of their broad-mindedness, openness, and ability to make friends. He expressed confidence that the artificial barriers would not erase the longstanding friendship between Russians and Cypriots.
The Ambassador highlighted that Cypriots are eagerly awaiting the mass return of Russian tourists and the restoration of direct flights. He expressed confidence that "any crisis sooner or later ends, and we will return to full-fledged constructive interaction."
Regarding economic cooperation, Zyazikov noted that mutually beneficial interaction with Russia has always brought significant income to Cyprus and provided jobs for many local residents. However, due to the current international situation, some joint projects have been scaled back not at Russia's initiative.
The eighth EU sanctions package, which prohibits the provision of accounting and consulting services to Russian companies, has affected Cypriot law firms, whose portfolios previously included up to 40% Russian clients.
Zyazikov stated that he is convinced that the relationship between Russia and Cyprus will continue to be based on the decades-long rich experience of friendship and mutually beneficial cooperation between the two nations.
The diplomat also emphasized that one of the embassy's main priorities is maintaining strong ties with the more than 120,000 Russians living on the island. The Consular Department has doubled the number of slots for providing the most in-demand services, reflecting the increased demand.
Zyazikov concluded by stating that the diplomatic representation pays close attention to interacting closely with fellow citizens, solving their urgent problems, and supporting their internal consolidation. He believes that such communication is essential.
