In Cyprus, firefighters battled a large fire throughout the night that broke out yesterday afternoon near Limassol. The blaze was caused by fireworks set off by two teenagers, who have since confessed.
According to local media, the large fire in Trimiklini started after two minors, aged 12 and 13, set off fireworks. Authorities confirmed this information. The teenagers have been found and, in the presence of their parents, admitted their guilt.
Andreas Orphanos, the leader of the Trimiklini community, explained on the "Alpha Kalimera" show that the massive fire destroyed an entire mountain covered with wild vegetation and trees, including pines and olive trees.
The large fire erupted yesterday afternoon between the villages of Lania and Trimiklini. The first fire began after noon near the village of Anogyra.
Forces from the Forestry Department, Fire Service, Game and Fauna Service, Civil Defense, and volunteers were deployed to fight the blaze. Eleven aircraft were also utilized in the effort.
As a result of the incident, EAC power poles were damaged, leading to power outages in the area, and a standalone building was burned down.
Mountain Community Commissioner Charalambos Christophinas noted that information about the two minors emerged early on. He emphasized that a significant environmental disaster occurred, affecting a mountain of rare beauty.
The battle against the fire continued throughout the night. By morning, the fire was brought under control.
