UN Official Calls Economic Isolation of TRNC a ‘Serious Concern’
The Labour Market Guide, a digital database containing economic and labour market data for the entire island, was officially launched at Ledra Palace Hotel in Cyprus. This project, which for the first time compiles labour market statistics from across Cyprus into a single platform, is available in three languages.
Speaking at the event, Colin Stewart, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in Cyprus and Head of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), highlighted that the economic isolation of Northern Cyprus poses significant challenges for ordinary citizens.
In his opening remarks, Stewart emphasized that compiling such a guide, based on widely acknowledged facts, is crucial. He also noted that EU support for the project could enhance cooperation between the two communities and contribute to finding a resolution.
According to the UN envoy, the economic disparity between the two sides is one of the most frustrating aspects of the Cyprus issue, adding that the North’s economic isolation creates serious difficulties for TRNC residents.
“Unfortunately, measures aimed at resolving the issue have not yielded positive results. The North has become even more economically dependent on Turkey, while economic ties between the South and the North have weakened over time due to isolation,” Stewart stressed.
Also speaking at the event were Julia Bertozzolo, Head of the European Commission’s Support for the Peace Process in Cyprus, and representatives of various organizations from both communities.
The Labour Market Guide, which includes labour force statistics from across Cyprus, was developed by the Labour Market Working Group of the Cyprus Dialogue Forum, comprising 17 organizations. The guide features over 100 interactive tables.
Covering key topics such as wages, cost of living, employment, unemployment, social security, and trade, the guide is available online in Turkish, Greek, and English at: libguides.cydialogue.org/labour.
