The President of the TRNC announced the date and time of the meeting with the personal representative of the UN Secretary-General in Cyprus.
The President of the TRNC, Ersin Tatar, has stated that he will meet with the personal representative of the UN Secretary-General, María Ángela Olguín Cuéllar, on January 30th. The negotiations are scheduled for 11:30.
The leader of the Turkish Cypriots made a statement to the correspondent of the Turkish Agency in Cyprus (TAK) regarding the reports presented by the UN Secretary-General to the Security Council and recent events. One of the two reports is dedicated to the operations of the UN Peacekeeping Forces, and the other to the Good Office Mission of the UN.
It is worth noting that earlier, the United Nations stated that despite disagreements between the two communities, a "mutually acceptable solution" is still possible in Cyprus. This was announced at a press conference in New York by the UN Special Representative and Head of the UN Peacekeeping Mission in Cyprus, Colin Stewart.
Ersin Tatar emphasized that Colin Stewart's emphasis on a compromise model acceptable to both sides is particularly important.
"The reason I emphasize this is as follows. The UN Secretary-General spent 2 years convincing the Greek side, which violated the agreement reached in 2021, to appoint a personal representative. In the end, I accepted the candidacy proposed by Mr. Guterres on December 10th," said the head of Northern Cyprus.
Ersin Tatar also reminded that the "sole responsibility" of María Ángela Olguín Cuéllar, appointed as a personal representative for a term of no more than 6 months, will be to investigate whether there is a common basis between the two sides for an official process.
"In addition to the work of the Personal Representative, we did not stand still and offered an additional cooperation process. To start this process, I expressed readiness to hold a trilateral meeting with Mr. Christodoulides, organized by the UN Secretary-General, both during our personal meeting with Mr. Guterres in New York and in our subsequent phone conversation," said the President of the TRNC.
In concluding his speech, Ersin Tatar reiterated the call for the Cyprus-Greek side to abandon hostile attitudes.
"Let's turn Cyprus, with which we share one geography, into an island of cooperation. Let both peoples win and contribute to the stability of our region," urged the leader of the Turkish Cypriots.
It is worth recalling that it was previously reported that the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in Cyprus, María Ángela Olguín Cuéllar, would arrive on the island after January 27th.
