Preventive use of antivirals may reduce the spread of influenza

According to an assessment by the EU Joint Research Centre (JRC), the preventive use of antiviral medications can significantly reduce the transmission of influenza during seasonal outbreaks. This primarily concerns the use of such drugs among people in high-risk groups, as well as in closed settings — nursing homes, medical facilities, and households where infections have already been recorded.
Experts emphasize that this approach does not replace vaccination, but can serve as an additional protective tool, especially in years of high pressure on healthcare systems. The greatest effect is achieved when antivirals are used early and under medical supervision.
At the same time, specialists warn that widespread and uncontrolled use of antiviral drugs may lead to reduced effectiveness and the development of viral resistance; therefore, any preventive measures should be carried out strictly in accordance with doctors’ recommendations and national health authorities.
