Only 389 People with Disabilities Employed in Cyprus Public Sector Since 2010

Since the law on the recruitment of persons with disabilities into the wider public sector came into force in 2010, only 389 people were hired up until 2024. These figures were presented during a joint meeting of the parliamentary committees on Education and Labour.
Of the total number, 291 individuals were employed in the Education Service and 44 in the Civil Service. Additionally, 10 people were hired for permanent hourly positions, 34 for fixed-term contracts in the civil service, and 10 in semi-governmental organizations.
Despite the established 10% quota for total recruitment, actual figures remain significantly below the target. Representatives of relevant departments explained that some applications are rejected due to a lack of qualifications for specific positions or failure to meet legal criteria.
Representatives of organizations for people with disabilities called for a review of assessment criteria and the provision of real integration conditions, including reasonable workplace adjustments. Members of Parliament expressed concern over the low numbers and stated the need for better inter-service coordination and potential legislative changes.
