Belgrade Flight Diverted to Paphos Due to Heavy Fog at Larnaca Airport
A flight from Belgrade was unable to land at Larnaca Airport due to thick fog, forcing it to divert to Paphos. Passengers spent the night on board the plane.
One of the passengers shared details of the incident, which occurred during the night between Friday and Saturday. The flight from Belgrade was scheduled to land at Larnaca Airport at around 3:20 AM.
However, due to the dense fog blanketing the area, the plane was redirected to Paphos, where it landed safely at around 4:00 AM.
According to the passenger, no one was allowed to disembark from the plane. About half an hour later, the pilot announced that after refueling, the plane would take off for Larnaca. Around 30-40 minutes later, passengers were informed that a bus had been arranged for those who wished to leave the plane sooner. The bus arrived about an hour later.
"It seems that Paphos Airport only starts operating at 6:00 AM, so there was no staff available. But they could have told us that earlier, as even the flight attendants didn’t seem to know what was going on or why the plane was waiting," the passenger said.
In total, passengers spent around two and a half hours sitting on the plane at Paphos Airport. At exactly 6:00 AM, the bus arrived. Some passengers disembarked in Paphos, while the rest stayed onboard, waiting for the flight to Larnaca. The narrator was among the first to take the bus. On the way to Larnaca, the bus also picked up passengers from three other flights that had similarly been diverted to Paphos.
Additionally, according to Hermes Airports, the Cyprus airport services company, a total of four flights were diverted from Larnaca to Paphos due to the fog. These flights originated from Frankfurt, Zurich, Belgrade, and Athens, with around 700 passengers on board. By 7:00 AM, the planes from Athens and Belgrade had returned to Larnaca, while the others departed later.
