The escapee from the Lakatamia Central Prison surrendered to the police. A week after the escape, the fugitive voluntarily appeared at the police station in Nicosia.
According to local media reports, the 28-year-old fugitive, who had been on the run, surrendered to the police today at 10:15 a.m. Subsequently, he was arrested based on a court order issued against him. It is expected that he will appear in court tomorrow for case registration.
Recall that the escape occurred last Thursday, January 25th. The fugitive turned out to be 28-year-old Savvas Charalambous from Paleochori, who was held in custody at the police station pending trial. The suspect was arrested on January 22nd in connection with a theft and robbery case committed in Nicosia on January 16th.
During hygiene procedures, the man entered a neighboring cell specifically designed for people with disabilities, where he took a metal support rod, which he then brought into the cell where he was held. That same evening, using the metal rod, he broke through the brick wall of the detention facility and escaped.
After the escape, the chief of police ordered a report to be compiled on this case: three police officers were suspended from duty.
