A seven-meter statue of a winemaker installed in Limassol municipal garden
On Monday, a seven-meter statue of a winemaker was installed in the traditional location of the Limassol municipal garden as part of preparations for the 64th Wine Festival of the city.
The statue depicts a man in traditional Cypriot clothing — a vest and wide trousers known as vrakas — holding a wine jug in one hand and a bunch of grapes in the other. The positioning of the figure was accompanied by a choir performance and welcomed by Limassol Mayor Yiannis Armeftis.
The mayor stated that this year’s festival will include “innovations and a refreshed atmosphere” and that the city intends to present an updated program aimed at different age groups. He also expressed hope that attendance will surpass the record set last year.
According to the mayor, the festival gives “special importance” to ties with rural areas, especially in light of the July wildfire that seriously damaged rural areas of the Limassol district. The program includes events both in the city and in villages, including Malia and Kalo Chorio, which were affected by the July fire.
The 64th Wine Festival will begin on September 27 and continue until October 5, with organizers emphasizing participation from both urban and rural communities.
