Cypriot Olympic Silver Medalist Returns Home
Cypriot sailor Pavlos Kontides, who clinched the silver medal at the Paris Olympics, has returned home to a hero's welcome. He was greeted at Larnaca Airport with a water cannon salute, honoring his remarkable achievement.
Among those welcoming him were family, friends, and a large crowd of supporters, along with Deputy Minister of Shipping Marina Hadjimanolis, Hermes Airports CEO Eleni Kalogirou, and representatives from the Limassol Nautical Club.
The Municipality of Larnaca presented Kontides with an olive wreath and a special gift, while the Cyprus Sports Organization honored him with a silver wreath.
Pavlos Kontides remains the only Cypriot athlete to have ever won an Olympic medal. He first made history at the London Olympics on August 6, 2012, when he secured his first medal for Cyprus.
On August 7, 2024, exactly 12 years and a day later, Kontides repeated his success at the Paris Olympics, solidifying his legacy as a top athlete.
Kontides is also a two-time European champion.
