Cypriot Students Can Now Wear Shorts: New Directive from the Ministry of Education

The Ministry of Education of the Republic of Cyprus has issued a new circular — an official document requiring schools to follow uniform rules. According to the directive, students are now allowed to wear bermuda shorts — knee-length, straight-cut shorts considered part of the official school uniform.
The decision is addressed to all secondary schools on the island and aims to increase student comfort in the hot climate while maintaining a neat and uniform appearance.
Under the new rules, boys and girls may wear dark-colored bermudas — mainly dark blue or graphite — paired with a shirt and mandatory school shoes. Students are also advised to maintain neatness and refrain from wearing bright accessories or sports shoes that do not meet the established standards.
Each school is required to hold meetings with parents and students to explain the new requirements. During the meetings, the administration will present uniform samples, remind students of dress code rules, and emphasize the importance of maintaining a neat appearance both at school and on the journey between home and school.
The ministry noted that the introduction of bermudas is linked to Cyprus’ climate and aims to improve student well-being during hot periods. The decision was made after consultations with parent committees and school leadership.
School administrators have already begun adapting the dress code rules. In some schools, the changes will take effect at the start of the next academic year. Parents have welcomed the initiative, highlighting that the new uniform will be more practical and comfortable for children.
The Ministry reminded that responsibility for complying with the uniform rests with students and their parents. If standards are not met, the school administration may issue temporary uniforms or notify parents.
