Media: Russian Spy Posed as a Plumber in Paphos and Became an MI6 Agent
British media have reported on a Russian spy who posed as a plumber in Cyprus before being recruited as a double agent by the UK.
According to the Omegalive portal, the British press claims that the UK’s Secret Intelligence Service, MI6, carried out an operation to turn the Russian spy into a double agent on Cyprus.
Allegedly, the Russian spy, codenamed “Sunshine 24,” posed as a plumber in Paphos. He reportedly provided plumbing services to personnel from the British Royal Air Force, as well as other British staff based on the island.
After his identity was uncovered, MI6 began monitoring him. During their surveillance, they discovered that the suspected Russian spy had a passion for fishing.
“In May, he was introduced to an undercover British agent, who contacted him under the pretext that his bedroom had been flooded. While the ‘plumber’ was working, they started chatting and discovered a shared love for fishing. Not long after, they even decided to go fishing together,” the report said.
It is believed that by July, the spy had been successfully recruited by British intelligence. It was also suggested that U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken mentioned this incident during a trip to the UK.
