The Personal Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General in Cyprus arrives on the island today. Maria Angela Holguín Cuéllar will hold a series of negotiations and meetings with the leaders of the two communities.
It is known that the Colombian diplomat will stay on the island for a week – until May 14. On Wednesday, May 8, the UN Secretary-General's envoy will meet with the leader of the Turkish Cypriots, Ersin Tatar. According to the president's press service, the meeting will start at 12:00.
Maria Angela Holguín Cuéllar will also hold negotiations with the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides.
Recall that on January 5, 2024, UN Secretary-General António Guterres tasked Maria Angela Holguín Cuéllar with determining over the course of 6 months whether there is common ground between the two sides to resume the official negotiation process.
The upcoming visit will be the UN Secretary-General's envoy's third since the beginning of the year. The first stage of negotiations with the leaders of the two communities took place at the end of January, and the second in mid-March. Prior to the upcoming trip, the diplomat made contacts on the Cyprus issue in Brussels and London and met with senior EU officials.
