Paphos Court Hands Down Maximum Sentence for Importing 28 kg of Cannabis
The Permanent Criminal Court of Paphos has sentenced an accused smuggler to the maximum term for importing 28 kilograms of cannabis into the country. The defendant pleaded guilty and received a 12-year prison sentence.
According to the statement from the Permanent Criminal Court, the man was charged with importing, possessing, and intending to distribute 28 kilograms of cannabis, as well as laundering proceeds from illegal activities totaling €1,470.00.
In delivering the verdict, the court took into account the defendant's admission of guilt, his remorse, personal circumstances, lack of prior convictions, and the fact that he cooperated with the police. He assisted in identifying individuals who played a major role in the drug smuggling business in Cyprus.
"As a result of this cooperation, he inevitably exposed himself to potential danger, an element which, according to judicial practice, should be taken into account at the sentencing stage," the statement from the Paphos Criminal Court said.
