Hearing Postponed in Case of German Real Estate Agent Accused of Property Deals in Northern Cyprus
A court in the Republic of Cyprus has once again postponed the hearing of a German real estate agent accused of carrying out property transactions involving Greek Cypriot land in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). The next hearing is now scheduled for May 23.
The accused, 49-year-old German citizen Eva Kunzel, was arrested on July 7 last year at Larnaca Airport as part of an investigation into the illegal sale of Greek Cypriot-owned properties in the north. The initial court session took place in mid-September, but proceedings have been repeatedly delayed since then.
Kunzel faces 44 charges, including promoting, facilitating the sale of, and using properties located in four areas of the Ayios Amvrosios and Kyrenia districts. She is also accused of profiting from these transactions, allegedly earning €169,000, and of purchasing an apartment in Northern Cyprus without the consent of the rightful owner.
Kunzel has denied all charges. The court has not disclosed the reason for the most recent postponement.
In a related development, the Nicosia Criminal Court last week delivered a verdict in a similar case involving two Hungarian nationals. Both women pleaded guilty to some of the charges. One was sentenced to 2.5 years in prison, and the other received a 15-month sentence.
